THE ORIGINAL DANDELION SITE
SINCE 2000

A few years back, a new Dandelion site appeared which has lifted, word for word, all the discographical info on this page; this without asking or even giving the courtesy of an acknowledgement as to its source.

I don't know who's behind the site - there's no contact link; but it's sad some folks who don't have the patience to do their own research feel they're entitled to pass off others' work as their own.

"John Peel's Dandelion Label" will remain the only place on the web where you can get answers to all your Dandy queries, and actually correspond with someone who recorded for the label. And that's a promise!

OK, rant over: to business -

**********

DANDELION RECORDS began life back in the heady days of flower power as an idealistic venture by British DJ, the late John Peel.

The label launched on Friday 18th July 1969 and ran until 1972; then the curtain fell. That should have been it.

Strangely however, it wasn't.

LONG BEFORE See For Miles and Cherry Red Records began their excellent programmes of reissues, Dandelion had achieved cult status amongst record collectors. Original vinyl LPs in mint condition were changing hands for (frankly) unbelievable prices. They still are.

A little-known fact for trivia enthusiasts: Dandelion was one of John Peel's hamsters (come to that, so was Biscuit who generously donated his/her name to D's associated music publishing company).

The label's high point? Undoubtedly Medicine Head's chart success in 1971 with "Pictures In The Sky". And the low? Well, with hindsight, some would say it was a mistake turning down Roxy Music! But that's rock 'n' roll...

You can read about these and many other Dandy-related triumphs and disasters in Clive Selwood's highly recommended "All The Moves (but none of the licks)" (Peter Owen 2003). And to whet your appetite, check out this great interview with Clive by Cherry Red's Iain McNay...

EIGHTEEN ACTS released twenty-seven albums (plus one compilation "sampler") during Dandelion's three-year existence. Of these, sixteen have current websites or web pages. And they tell a fascinating continuing story.

So here they are - the links you need to stay in touch. And if you've questions to ask, or memories to share, be sure to visit the "Dandelion Records Forum".

I ask one favour in return for this wealth of info. If you run across any other mainline sites or home pages for the "Dandelion Eighteen", do let me know. I'm always interested, and I'm always around on cjtmidgley@gmail.com.

A postscript: Cherry Red Records acquired the entire catalogue of original Dandelion recordings (excluding Tractor/The Way We Live) in September 2009.

GENE VINCENT - one of rock 'n' roll's great pioneers
JOHN TREVOR - Beau's alter ego

PRINCIPAL EDWARDS MAGIC THEATRE - performance art group from Exeter University
SIREN - known in the beginning as Coyne-Clague

I’m truly sorry folks, but because of the proliferation of re-releases - and particularly downloads, streaming etc. - it’s really not practical to keep this page up-to-date with all the new information. I'm pretty sure it's comprehensive up to 2012; however, I'm sure someone out there will tell me that's not so!

But if you have particular questions, queries or thoughts on John Peel's Dandelion label, do let me know.

It's always great to hear from you – TM.
