WEB BONUS

THIS ‘WEB BONUS’ CD has been put under the same microscope as all two-hundred-and-eight discs reviewed in "DYLAN: CONTRABAND". Same headings, detail, and independent conclusions.

If you're not familiar with D/C, the rule-of-thumb is simple. Wherever you see assessments of "Very Good", "Excellent" or "Superlative", you can’t go wrong; "Quite Good", "Fair" or "Poor", maybe you can.

THIS PARTICULAR WRITE-UP will only be posted here for a few weeks; then it will be moved to the Web Bonus Archive. So do make sure you re-visit soon and stay up-to-date.

OK, we all know where we’re going. Let’s go…

OVERALL SOUND QUALITY - Quite Good
‘Audience’ digital mono. Less crisp than we are entitled
to expect from digital recordings.

The volume is uneven during the first few bars of Maggie’s
Farm, and there's a sound glitch five seconds into Tonight
I’ll Be Staying Here With You. Sound glitches also occur
in the audience section between Highway 61 and Don’t
Think Twice, and during Love Sick. There is a surge in
volume in ‘Til I Fell In Love With You.

PRESENTATION - Quite Good
Slimline 2 CD jewel box with see-through disc tray.
All-colour folded insert; close-up facial shot on front,
‘Bob-with-Charlton-Heston’ across ‘pages 2 & 3’, plus
off-duty pic and disc-production credits on ‘page 4’.
‘Pope-gig’ performance photo under disc tray. Further
facial close-up on back of box, overlaid with track / location
detail and the ‘Zipper-Deke’ logo. Basic cream custom
discs, showing only Zipperman, Disc 1 & 2.

OVERALL ASSESSMENT -
I can’t say that this is my favourite bootleg of all time;
however, let’s start with the positives. This is the full El Rey
set from 20th December 1997, and the audience is justifiably
enthusiastic. These are good performances, but unfortunately,
our mic-person doesn’t have the best seat in the house.
Many songs come over emotionally flat. On top of that,
Bob’s voice isn’t always as prominent as it could be.
There are standout numbers - the ever-dependable Silvio
is followed by a nice slow Cocaine, and an even better
John Brown - but not everyone will stay around long enough
to sort out the wheat from the chaff. Oh, and one-hundred-
and-one minutes is not very long for a double-CD; I’d rather
have quality than quantity every time, but the fact remains
that many double sets offer upwards of three-quarters-of-an-hour
more playing time than PARTING THE RED SEA FROM JERUSALEM AND
BACK. Three words appeared on my pad after I & I - ‘frankly,
rather forgettable’. That just about sums up my feel for the
CD as a whole.

(Note: This full set is also featured (in better quality) on the
‘Oh Babe It Ain’t No Lie’ CD. I've recently run down a copy of 'Oh Babe...',
which I'll review in detail as a future Web Bonus.)

STANDOUT TRACKS -
Silvio, Cocaine Blues, John Brown, Love Sick.

VALUE FOR MONEY - Quite Good
