GIBRALTAR

GIBRALTAR CITY & THE ROCK

Casemates Square
FINLAYSON’S KIOSK (Refreshment kiosk)

Mama Lulu’s (actually, Menorquina Ice Cream) (Coconut)

Overall Quality: Quite Good

Value For Money: Quite Good

Regular style, served in an individual cup/tub (two scoops)

Texture: As it should be…

Taste: OK - as you’d expect!

Other thoughts:

"A fair-tasting Ice Cream at a reasonable price (bearing in mind this is a tourist area). Good consistency, with plenty of shreds of dessicated coconut. Definitely worth a try..."

Marina Bay
BIANCAS (Bistro Pizzeria)

Menorquina Ice Cream (Hazelnut)

Overall Quality: Quite Good

Value For Money: Very Good

Regular style, served in a Sundae dish (more than three scoops!)

Texture: Icy

Taste: OK - as you’d expect!

Other thoughts:

"This was a really good helping at a very fair price, particularly for a tourist eatery. It's a smooth Ice Cream - no hazelnut pieces despite the name. However, the hazelnut taste is very pronounced and pleasant. Shame about one or two small ice crystals. They, together with a slight lumpiness, show that at some time this Ice Cream has been held at the wrong temperature; which has knocked the "Overall Quality" assessment down one notch. That said, the overall value for money still rates as Very Good."

Rock Hotel
BARBARY BAR (Casual restaurant)

Own Brand of Ice Cream (Strawberry, Vanilla, Melon, topped with cream and a cherry)

Overall Quality: Excellent

Value For Money: Very Good

Regular style, served in a Sundae dish (five scoops!)

Texture: As it should be…

Taste: OK - as you’d expect!

Other thoughts:

"The Rock is Gibraltar's premier hotel, and you would therefore expect Ice Cream at such an establishment to be a gourmet, rather than a gourmand, experience. Well, so it is, but I have to say, the helping wasn't at all bad! I had five scoops, topped off with cream and a cherry. The Vanilla was subtle but tasty and the Melon satisfactorily sharp, but the accolade must go to the Strawberry. I'm not generally a Strawberry man, but this was exquisite! If you're a single-flavour devotee and find yourself in Gibraltar, head for the Barbary Bar at the Rock Hotel and order a Strawberry Ice Cream. It won't be cheap, but I promise you won't be disappointed!"
